A masterful 1647 etching by Rembrandt van Rijn, depicting the Holy Family resting at night by the light of a lantern.
Rembrandt van Rijn produced this etching, The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, in 1647. It depicts the Holy Family during their journey to escape Herod. Unlike many traditional depictions of this subject, which often focus on the landscape or the travel itself, Rembrandt chooses an intimate, nocturnal setting. The scene is dominated by deep shadows and the singular, warm glow of a lantern hanging from a tree branch.
The composition relies on the contrast between the darkness of the night and the light emanating from the lantern. This light illuminates the faces of Joseph and Mary, who sits with the infant Jesus in her lap. Joseph is shown reading, a detail that adds a sense of quiet domesticity to the biblical narrative. The surrounding foliage is rendered with dense, cross-hatched lines, creating a sense of enclosure and privacy. A donkey, barely visible in the gloom, stands to the right, reinforcing the transient nature of their situation.
Rembrandt demonstrates his mastery of the etching medium here. He uses drypoint to add burr to the plate, which allows for the velvety, dark blacks that define the atmosphere. The lines are varied in weight and direction, building up the texture of the tree bark and the folds of the figures' clothing. This work is characteristic of his mid-career style, where he moved away from the highly polished finish of his earlier prints toward a more expressive, painterly approach to printmaking. The focus remains on the human element of the story, presenting the figures not as distant icons, but as individuals experiencing a moment of respite in the dark.
