A dramatic High Renaissance depiction of the biblical sacrifice of Isaac, rendered with technical precision and atmospheric depth by Andrea del Sarto.
Andrea del Sarto, a master of the Florentine High Renaissance, produced this depiction of the biblical narrative during the final years of his career. The composition captures the dramatic moment when Abraham, commanded by God to sacrifice his son Isaac, is interrupted by an angel. The artist employs a sophisticated use of colour, particularly in the contrast between the deep crimson of Abraham's robes and the pale, luminous flesh tones of Isaac.
Del Sarto is recognised for his technical precision and his ability to convey psychological tension through gesture and expression. In this work, the figures are arranged in a tight, sculptural grouping that occupies the foreground, while the background recedes into a rocky, atmospheric vista. The angel, descending from the upper right, provides a diagonal force that balances the verticality of Abraham and the kneeling posture of Isaac. The lighting is carefully managed to model the musculature of the figures, reflecting the influence of contemporary developments in Florentine art.
This painting demonstrates the artist's command of oil technique, allowing for subtle transitions in tone and texture. The drapery, with its complex folds and metallic sheen, is characteristic of del Sarto's mature style. The work remains a significant example of the artist's approach to narrative clarity and formal harmony, qualities that defined his contribution to the Italian Renaissance. The original panel resides in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and its interpretation of the Old Testament subject matter.
