A serene Neo-Impressionist scene by Maximilien Luce, depicting a shepherd and his flock overlooking a sun-drenched Mediterranean coastline.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, captures a serene coastal scene in this work. The composition features a shepherd resting upon a sun-drenched hillside, accompanied by a loyal dog, while a flock of sheep grazes on the golden, grassy slope. Below, the Mediterranean sea stretches towards the horizon, dotted with small vessels, with a coastal town visible along the shoreline.
Luce employs a technique influenced by pointillism, though his application of colour is often more fluid and expressive than the strict scientific divisionism of Georges Seurat. The palette is dominated by warm, golden yellows and ochres on the hillside, which contrast with the cool, deep blues of the water and the sky. This juxtaposition creates a sense of warmth and light, typical of the artist's later period when he moved away from the urban industrial subjects of his early career towards more tranquil, rural, and coastal themes.
The brushwork is deliberate and rhythmic, building the form of the sheep and the texture of the hillside through short, visible strokes. The shepherd, positioned centrally, provides a human element that anchors the scene, inviting the viewer to share in the quiet observation of the maritime vista. The painting reflects the artist's interest in the effects of natural light on the terrain, a preoccupation that defined much of his output during his time spent in the south of France. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's ability to balance structured composition with a spontaneous, light-filled atmosphere, resulting in a work that captures a fleeting moment of peace in the Mediterranean sun.
