This miniature painting depicts the siege of Arbela during the Mongol campaigns of Hulagu Khan. It originates from the Jami al-tavarikh, or Compendium of Chronicles, a monumental historical text commissioned by the Ilkhanid vizier Rashid al-Din. The Mughal court atelier, under the patronage of Emperor Akbar, produced this specific manuscript in the late sixteenth century. Basavana, a master painter of the imperial workshop, demonstrates his command of narrative composition and characterisation in this work.

The scene presents a fortified city wall occupying the upper portion of the frame, where defenders observe the conflict below. A rider emerges from the city gate, while the foreground is occupied by a dense assembly of soldiers, cavalry, and commanders. The artist employs a high vantage point, allowing for the clear organisation of the various military units and the chaotic energy of the engagement.
