A 1862 oil painting by Gustave Courbet depicting a female nude in a natural forest setting, rendered with a focus on tactile realism.
Gustave Courbet painted The Source in 1862, a period during which he explored the relationship between the human form and the natural world. The composition features a female nude viewed from behind, positioned at the edge of a rocky stream. Her posture is relaxed, leaning against a fallen branch as water cascades down the stone face behind her.
Courbet applies paint with a focus on tactile qualities, contrasting the smooth, pale skin of the figure with the rough, dark textures of the surrounding forest. The lighting is directed to illuminate the figure, creating a clear separation from the shadowed, dense foliage. This work reflects the artist's interest in the physical presence of his subjects, moving away from the idealised depictions common in academic painting of the era.
The palette consists of deep forest greens, earthy browns, and cool greys, which ground the figure within the environment. The water at the base of the stream is rendered with subtle highlights, suggesting movement and transparency. By placing the figure in a specific, unrefined setting, Courbet emphasises the material reality of the scene. The work is part of a series of paintings where the artist examined the interplay of light and shadow in natural settings, often incorporating the female form as a central element. This piece remains a clear example of his approach to Realism, where the subject is treated with directness and attention to physical detail.
