Description

A detailed sixteenth-century engraving depicting Saint Stephen riding an elephant in a triumphal procession, rendered with fine hatching and classical motifs.

This engraving, attributed to the Flemish publisher and artist Hieronymus Cock, depicts Saint Stephen in a triumphal procession. The saint is shown mounted upon an elephant, a creature rarely seen in Europe during the sixteenth century, which adds a layer of exoticism to the religious narrative. He holds a banner featuring a depiction of the Virgin and Child, while two figures pull the animal forward with ropes. The composition is typical of the period, combining classical triumphal motifs with Christian iconography. In the upper left, a celestial vision of God the Father and Christ appears amidst clouds, observing the scene below. The background features a distant architectural complex, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of Flemish printmaking from this era. The figures are modelled with strong hatching, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a theological context for the image, framing the martyrdom of Stephen as a victory of faith over adversity. Hieronymus Cock was a central figure in the dissemination of prints in Antwerp, operating his publishing house, 'The Four Winds'. His work often bridged the gap between Italian Renaissance influences and Northern European traditions. This piece demonstrates the technical skill of the engravers working under his direction, showcasing a mastery of perspective and anatomical detail. The elephant, while anatomically imaginative, serves as a powerful vehicle for the saint, elevating the subject matter beyond a standard hagiographic depiction. The print remains a compelling example of how sixteenth-century artists utilised classical visual language to communicate complex religious themes to a contemporary audience.
