A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the rural village of Yase, featuring figures on a path amidst the quiet fields of Kyoto.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige belongs to the series Famous Places in Kyoto, produced during the 1830s. The composition depicts the rural outskirts of Kyoto, specifically the village of Yase, a location historically associated with the imperial court and local porters. Hiroshige employs a clear, horizontal structure to guide the viewer across the scene, beginning with the figures in the foreground who carry bundles of firewood along a narrow path.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the bokashi technique, visible in the subtle colour gradients of the sky and the distant hills. The palette remains restrained, relying on soft greens, earthy browns, and a distinct blue wash to define the horizon. The figures, rendered with minimal detail, provide a sense of scale against the open fields. A single tree, positioned to the left, breaks the horizontal lines of the terrain, adding a vertical element that balances the composition.
Unlike the more dramatic weather effects found in some of Hiroshige's other series, this work focuses on the quiet, daily activities of the region. The inclusion of the series title and the artist's signature in the upper right corner follows the standard conventions of the period. The print offers a view into the rural life of nineteenth-century Japan, capturing the relationship between the inhabitants and their environment. The simplicity of the forms and the deliberate use of negative space reflect the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus remains on the atmosphere of the location rather than photographic accuracy.
