Engraving of the Virgin Mary at the moment of the Annunciation by Agostino Carracci, the Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist. The work is characterised by fine lines and careful attention to detail, typical of Carracci's engraving style.
Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) was an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist. He was a member of the Carracci family of artists, who played an important role in the development of Baroque art in Bologna and Rome. Agostino, along with his brother Annibale and cousin Ludovico, founded an art academy called the Accademia degli Incamminati, which promoted a synthesis of Renaissance and Mannerist styles. He produced a substantial body of prints, known for their technical skill and expressive qualities. His engravings often reproduced works by other artists, as well as his own designs. This engraving depicts the Virgin Mary at the moment of the Annunciation. The angel Gabriel, traditionally represented, is here replaced by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. The Virgin is shown with a serene expression, her hand extended in a gesture of acceptance. The composition is framed by a decorative border, and the inscription 'Ecce Ancilla Domini Roma' (Behold the handmaid of the Lord, Rome) appears at the bottom. The work is characterised by fine lines and careful attention to detail, typical of Carracci's engraving style.
