A 1942 still life by Georges Braque, featuring a wash stand rendered in his signature flattened, geometric style with a deep maroon and ochre palette.
Georges Braque, a central figure in the development of twentieth-century modernism, produced this still life in 1942. The composition depicts a wash stand, a common domestic object that Braque frequently revisited throughout his career. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to spatial organisation, where the boundaries between the object and its surroundings are intentionally blurred. By flattening the perspective, Braque invites the viewer to consider the arrangement of forms rather than a realistic representation of the scene.
The palette is dominated by deep, earthy tones, specifically a dark maroon that frames the composition and provides a contrast to the lighter, ochre-coloured surfaces of the wash basin and pitcher. Braque employs a simplified, almost schematic line quality to define the contours of the objects. The pitcher, placed to the left, acts as a solid anchor, while the basin and accompanying items are rendered with a sense of geometric reduction. The background, which suggests a window or an interior wall, is treated with the same attention to texture and pattern as the foreground, creating a unified surface that rejects traditional depth.
This piece reflects the artist's mature style, where his earlier, more radical experiments with fragmentation have settled into a refined, contemplative mode of painting. The work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the tactile quality of the paint and the balance of the composition. It is a study in domestic stillness, capturing the quiet presence of everyday items through a lens of abstraction. Braque's ability to transform mundane objects into subjects of formal interest remains a defining characteristic of his practice. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, consistent with his habit of marking his canvases during this period.
