A study of domestic simplicity, this still life by Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin captures the material quality of a copper water tank and kitchen vessels.
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, a master of the eighteenth-century French school, focused his attention on the quiet dignity of domestic objects. In this composition, he presents a copper water tank, a common household item of the period, elevated on a simple wooden stool. The painting demonstrates his characteristic approach to texture and light, where the metallic sheen of the copper contrasts with the matte surfaces of the surrounding vessels.
Chardin avoids the theatricality often associated with his contemporaries. Instead, he employs a restrained palette and a deliberate arrangement of everyday items, including a ladle, a small bucket, and a dark earthenware jug. The light enters from the left, casting a soft shadow against the wall behind the tank, which provides a sense of volume and physical presence to the objects. His brushwork is measured, building form through layers of pigment that capture the weight and material quality of the copper.
This work belongs to a series of still lifes that elevated humble kitchenware to the status of fine art. By isolating these objects, Chardin encourages the viewer to observe the subtle variations in tone and the play of light across surfaces. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the tank anchored by the smaller items placed on the table surface. The artist's signature is visible on the left, integrated into the background. This piece remains a primary example of his ability to find beauty in the mundane, offering a glimpse into the domestic environment of the mid-eighteenth century without unnecessary embellishment or narrative artifice.
