A Symbolist interpretation of the biblical parable, depicting the stark contrast between the beggar Lazarus and the opulent world of the rich man.
Gustave Moreau, a central figure in the French Symbolist movement, frequently turned to biblical narratives to explore themes of moral contrast and human suffering. In this work, he depicts the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The composition is divided by architectural elements that separate the two figures, creating a physical manifestation of their social and spiritual distance.
Lazarus is positioned in the foreground, seated on the steps of a grand structure. His posture is slumped, and his form is rendered with a focus on anatomical fragility. Beside him, a dog interacts with his sores, a detail drawn directly from the Gospel of Luke. The contrast between the beggar and the opulent, classical architecture behind him is typical of Moreau's approach to narrative art. He often used such settings to frame his subjects within a timeless, almost dreamlike environment.
The upper portion of the composition reveals a glimpse into the interior of the rich man's dwelling. Through the columns, one observes a more refined, sheltered space, which stands in opposition to the exposed, harsh conditions faced by Lazarus. Moreau employs a delicate application of watercolour and gouache, allowing for subtle gradations of tone that define the stone surfaces and the figures. The palette remains muted, relying on earth tones and soft ochres to maintain a sombre, reflective mood.
Moreau was known for his meticulous preparation, often producing numerous studies before completing a final work. This piece reflects his interest in the intersection of classical form and religious allegory. By focusing on the physical reality of the figures, he invites the viewer to consider the disparity between the two lives presented. The work avoids overt moralising, instead presenting the scene as a quiet, observational study of human condition and architectural scale.
