A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting three women in a quiet, domestic setting on a veranda.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts three women gathered on a veranda, a scene characteristic of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking in the late eighteenth century, bringing a refined aesthetic to the medium. His figures are notable for their elongated proportions and graceful postures, which depart from the more robust figures favoured by his contemporaries.
The composition is structured around the architectural elements of the veranda, which frame the figures and create a sense of interior space. One woman is seated, leaning against the railing, while the other two stand, engaged in a quiet interaction. The artist employs a muted colour palette, relying on subtle variations of earth tones, soft reds, and ochre to define the garments and the surrounding environment. The patterns on the kimonos are rendered with precision, adding texture to the flat planes of the figures.
To the left, a pine branch and morning glories provide a naturalistic counterpoint to the geometric lines of the building. The background features a glimpse of a distant view, suggesting an open-air setting while maintaining the intimacy of the domestic scene. Eishi was known for his ability to capture a sense of calm and poise in his subjects, avoiding the more dramatic or theatrical poses common in other ukiyo-e works of the period. This print demonstrates his technical skill in woodblock carving and his command of line, which remains clean and deliberate throughout the composition. The work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where the depiction of refined leisure was a popular subject for both artists and collectors.
