A detailed study of two tigers in a rocky, pine-filled setting, executed with the characteristic ink-wash style of the Kishi school.
Kishi Ganku, the founder of the Kishi school of painting, gained a reputation for his depictions of tigers. During the Edo period, tigers were not native to Japan, and artists often relied on imported skins or anecdotal descriptions to inform their work. Ganku, however, approached the subject with a focus on anatomical observation and expressive brushwork.
This composition features two tigers positioned within a rocky, pine-dotted environment. The artist employs a combination of fine, controlled lines for the fur and more fluid, wash-based techniques for the surrounding terrain. The standing tiger displays a sense of alertness, while the second animal is depicted in a more relaxed posture near the base of a pine tree. The background is kept relatively sparse, using subtle, undulating lines to suggest a misty or mountainous atmosphere, which allows the figures of the tigers to remain the primary focus of the viewer.
The Kishi school is noted for its departure from the more rigid conventions of the Kano school, favouring a style that incorporates elements of naturalism alongside traditional ink-wash techniques. Ganku's ability to convey the texture of the animals' coats through varied ink density is a hallmark of his practice. The work is presented as a folding screen, a format that dictates the horizontal flow of the scene. The use of negative space is deliberate, creating a balance between the detailed animal forms and the atmospheric surroundings. This piece reflects the artist's technical proficiency and his contribution to the development of animal portraiture in Japanese art history.
