Henri Rousseau's "Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!)" captures a tiger amidst a storm-swept jungle. Rousseau's self-taught style and imaginative vision create a captivating and slightly unsettling scene.
Henri Rousseau's "Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!)" is a striking example of his distinctive style. Painted in 1891, the oil on canvas work depicts a tiger caught in the midst of a storm. Rousseau, who never actually visited a jungle, drew inspiration from illustrated books and botanical gardens in Paris, resulting in his unique interpretation of exotic flora and fauna. He was self-taught, and his works are characterised by their flat perspective and meticulous attention to detail. His style is often categorised as Naïve Art. The painting presents a tiger crouching low to the ground, its eyes wide with surprise or perhaps fear. The surrounding foliage is rendered with a precise, almost dreamlike quality, with various shades of green and brown creating a dense, enveloping environment. Rain falls in streaks across the canvas, and lightning flashes in the distance, adding to the dramatic tension of the scene. A cluster of red flowers provides a striking contrast to the predominantly green palette. The composition is carefully balanced, drawing the viewer's eye to the tiger's expressive face and the surrounding storm-tossed vegetation. The painting is currently housed at the National Gallery, London.
