A delicate colour lithograph by Maurice Denis, capturing a dreamlike, Symbolist scene through flattened perspective and soft, muted tones.
Maurice Denis, a central figure of the Nabis group, produced this colour lithograph in 1892. The work reflects the aesthetic principles of the movement, which prioritised decorative qualities and subjective expression over the objective representation of reality. The title, inscribed at the base, captures the melancholic and ethereal mood characteristic of the Symbolist period.
The composition features a young woman standing before a dense, stylised foliage background. The figure is rendered with soft, muted tones, her form blending into the surrounding environment. Denis employs a flattened perspective, typical of his interest in Japanese woodblock prints, which he admired for their economy of line and colour. The palette consists of pale pinks, soft greens, and warm ochres, creating a gentle, dreamlike atmosphere. The repetition of floral motifs across the woman's dress and the background foliage provides a sense of rhythmic unity, typical of the Nabis' interest in the decorative arts.
As a member of the Nabis, Denis sought to move away from the naturalism of the Impressionists. He famously stated that a painting is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order. This lithograph demonstrates that philosophy, as the image functions as a harmonious arrangement of shapes and hues rather than a window into a three-dimensional space. The work is a fine example of the printmaking techniques that allowed the Nabis to reach a wider audience beyond the traditional gallery system. It remains a quiet, contemplative piece that invites the viewer to consider the emotional resonance of colour and form.
