A detailed etching by Paulus Potter depicting two cows in a rural setting, showcasing the artist's mastery of animal anatomy and line work.
Paulus Potter was a specialist in animal subjects during the Dutch Golden Age. This etching demonstrates his technical precision and his focus on the anatomy of livestock. The composition features two cows: one standing and viewed from the rear, the other resting on the ground in profile. Potter uses varied line weights to define the texture of the animals' hides and the surrounding rural environment. The background includes a simple fence and a distant horizon, which provides a sense of scale without distracting from the primary subjects.
Potter was active in Delft and The Hague, where he produced numerous paintings and prints of farm animals. His work is noted for its objective observation of nature. Unlike many of his contemporaries who placed animals within complex allegorical scenes, Potter often treated the animals as the sole subject of his work. This etching is part of a series that explores the physical presence of cattle in the Dutch countryside. The artist employs cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly on the flanks of the standing cow. The resting cow is rendered with softer lines, suggesting a relaxed posture. The inclusion of a small, distant figure on the horizon provides a subtle contrast to the large, foregrounded animals. This print reflects the interest in rural life and agricultural subjects that occupied many Dutch artists of the seventeenth century. The work is a clear example of the period's preference for naturalistic representation and the elevation of common subjects to the status of fine art.
