A refined example of Kamakura-period calligraphy by the poet Nun Abutsu, featuring two waka poems from the Zoku Kokin wakashū.
This piece displays the refined calligraphic hand of Nun Abutsu, a figure of significant standing in the literary circles of the Kamakura period. The work features two waka poems transcribed from the Zoku Kokin wakashū, an imperial anthology of Japanese poetry. The brushwork exhibits a fluid, cursive style known as kana, which was traditionally associated with the courtly aesthetic of the Heian period and maintained by scholars and poets in the subsequent centuries.
The ink flows across the paper with a rhythmic quality, demonstrating the controlled speed and pressure characteristic of expert calligraphic practice. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, a standard format for classical Japanese manuscripts. The paper itself retains a subtle, aged tone, providing a neutral background that allows the dark ink to remain the primary focus. The composition is balanced, with the spacing between the columns of text creating a sense of visual breathing room that complements the lyrical nature of the poems.
Nun Abutsu, also known as Abutsu-ni, was a poet and diarist who navigated the complex social and political structures of her time. Her involvement in legal disputes regarding her family estate is well documented, yet her literary contributions remain her most enduring aspect. This manuscript fragment reflects the high level of literacy and artistic training expected of women in the aristocratic and literary classes of medieval Japan. The preservation of such works allows for an examination of the intersection between personal expression and the formal requirements of imperial anthologies. The piece is presented here as a museum-grade fine art print, capturing the texture of the original ink and the subtle variations in the paper surface.
