An abstract etching and aquatint by Fred Becker, featuring rhythmic, gestural marks and geometric forms that evoke a sense of poetic movement.
Fred Becker was a significant figure in the American printmaking scene, particularly during the mid-twentieth century. His work often explored the intersection of graphic mark-making and abstract expression. In this piece, titled Two Poems with Birds, Becker employs a combination of etching and aquatint to create a composition that balances structured geometric forms with fluid, gestural lines.
The visual language here is one of controlled spontaneity. The dark, textured background provides a depth against which the lighter, incised lines and solid black shapes appear to float. These marks suggest avian forms or perhaps the rhythmic cadence of written language, aligning with the title's poetic reference. Becker avoids literal representation, opting instead for a symbolic arrangement that invites the viewer to interpret the relationship between the disparate elements.
Technically, the print demonstrates Becker's mastery of the intaglio process. The contrast between the soft, tonal areas of the aquatint and the sharp, biting lines of the etching creates a sense of movement across the plate. The composition is contained within a vertical rectangle, yet the internal energy of the marks pushes against these boundaries. This work reflects the broader mid-century interest in non-objective art, where the focus shifted toward the physical properties of the medium and the expressive potential of the line. It is a thoughtful example of how printmaking can function as a space for experimentation, allowing for a dialogue between the artist's hand and the resistance of the metal plate. The result is a balanced, rhythmic image that maintains a sense of mystery through its abstraction.
