A striking abstract lithograph by George Sugarman, featuring bold black and red geometric forms that explore spatial dynamics and minimalist composition.
George Sugarman, an American sculptor known for his polychrome works, often explored the relationship between form, space, and colour. This lithograph displays his interest in geometric reduction and the physical presence of mark-making. The composition is divided into two distinct visual elements: a jagged, angular black form on the left and a symmetrical, house-like red outline on the right.
The black form possesses a sense of kinetic energy, with its sharp corners and directional shifts suggesting a three-dimensional object flattened onto the paper. The brushwork remains visible, providing a tactile quality that contrasts with the stark, empty background. In comparison, the red form offers a more stable, architectural presence. Its open structure invites the viewer to consider the negative space contained within the lines.
Sugarman often moved away from the rigid constraints of traditional sculpture, preferring to create works that occupied space in an unconventional manner. This print reflects that same spirit of experimentation. By limiting the palette to black and red against a neutral ground, the artist forces a focus on the weight and balance of the shapes themselves. The work avoids representational imagery, instead relying on the interaction between the two forms to generate visual tension. It is a study in contrast, where the fluid, gestural application of ink meets the deliberate, structural nature of the shapes. This piece provides a clear view into the artist's process, where the simplicity of the design belies the careful consideration of proportion and spatial dynamics.
