A dreamlike lithograph by Marc Chagall, featuring expressive figures and celestial motifs rendered in deep blues and charcoal tones.
This lithograph by Marc Chagall reflects his lifelong engagement with biblical narratives, a theme that occupied much of his later career. Commissioned by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, Chagall produced a vast series of etchings and lithographs interpreting the Old Testament. This specific composition, often associated with his designs for the Bible, demonstrates his characteristic approach to mythological and spiritual subjects. The work employs a dreamlike visual language, where figures float within a fluid, atmospheric space.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. On the right, a central figure, possibly representing a prophet or a divine messenger, is depicted with sweeping, gestural lines. Below this figure, a smaller, serene face emerges from the darkness, accompanied by the suggestion of a harp, which evokes the psalms of David. The left side of the print features a more abstract, celestial arrangement, with a large, pale orb balanced against darker, textured washes of blue and charcoal.
Chagall uses a restricted palette of deep blues, greys, and off-white tones to create a sense of nocturnal mystery. The application of ink varies from dense, opaque blocks to lighter, splattered effects, which provide a sense of depth and movement. The figures are not rendered with anatomical precision, but rather through expressive, calligraphic marks that convey emotional weight. This print captures the artist's ability to blend personal memory with ancient tradition, resulting in a work that feels both archaic and distinctly modern. It is a fine example of Chagall's mastery of the lithographic medium, where he manipulated the stone to achieve a painterly quality, allowing for soft transitions between light and shadow.
