A fine art print of an illuminated Quranic folio by the master Ottoman calligrapher Ahmed Karahisari, featuring gold leaf and lapis lazuli pigments.
This work represents the pinnacle of sixteenth-century Ottoman manuscript production. Ahmed Karahisari, a master of the Thuluth and Naskh scripts, was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent to produce some of the most refined Quranic texts of the era. The composition features a symmetrical layout, typical of high-status codices, where the central text blocks are framed by elaborate borders.
The illumination employs a sophisticated palette of lapis lazuli blue and burnished gold. The borders are decorated with floral motifs and geometric patterns, demonstrating the technical precision required for such royal commissions. The calligraphy itself displays the characteristic fluidity and balance associated with Karahisari, whose work is noted for its rhythmic quality and structural clarity.
In this folio, the text is arranged in distinct panels, allowing the script to occupy a primary position within the decorative scheme. The use of gold leaf provides a luminous quality to the page, reflecting light and adding depth to the two-dimensional surface. The surrounding illumination serves to guide the eye toward the sacred text, creating a visual hierarchy that balances ornamentation with legibility. This piece is a representative example of the aesthetic standards maintained in the imperial workshops of Istanbul during the mid-sixteenth century, where the integration of calligraphy and illumination reached a state of equilibrium.
