A late-career abstract work by Sam Francis, featuring a rhythmic, grid-like arrangement of blue linear forms on a light ground.
Sam Francis, a central figure in the development of post-war American abstraction, produced this work in 1983. The composition reflects his later period, where he moved away from the expansive, colour-saturated fields of his earlier career towards a more structured, grid-like arrangement. The canvas is dominated by a series of loosely drawn, rectangular forms that repeat across the surface, creating a rhythmic, almost architectural order against a stark, light-toned ground.
Francis often explored the relationship between light and space, a preoccupation that remained consistent throughout his career. In this piece, the application of paint is deliberate yet retains a sense of spontaneity. The blue pigment, applied with varying pressure, allows for drips and thin washes to interact with the raw canvas. These marks provide a sense of movement, preventing the grid from appearing static or rigid. The interplay of negative space and the sparse, linear elements demonstrates his ability to balance emptiness with precise, gestural mark-making.
Unlike his earlier, more chaotic compositions, this work shows a disciplined approach to form. The repetition of the rectangular motifs suggests a systematic investigation of the picture plane, yet the hand-drawn quality of each shape ensures the work remains personal and immediate. Francis spent significant time in Japan and France, and his work frequently synthesises Western abstract traditions with Eastern concepts of space and void. This print captures the essence of his late-career style, where the economy of means serves to draw the viewer into a quiet, contemplative experience. It is a study in restraint, demonstrating how a few simple marks can define the character of a large surface.
