A classic example of Mark Rothko's Color Field painting, featuring soft-edged horizontal bands of yellow and grey.
This work belongs to the mature period of Mark Rothko, during which he refined his signature format of stacked rectangular forms. The composition consists of horizontal bands of colour that appear to hover within the frame. Rothko applied thin, translucent layers of paint, allowing the underpainting to bleed through the surface. This technique creates a sense of luminosity and depth, as the edges of the forms soften and blur into one another.
The palette is dominated by variations of yellow, ranging from deep ochre to lighter, sun-drenched tones. A narrow, cooler band of grey sits at the base, providing a visual anchor that contrasts with the warmth of the upper sections. By removing representational imagery, Rothko intended for the viewer to engage directly with the physical presence of the colour and the scale of the canvas.
Rothko often spoke of his desire to express basic human emotions, such as tragedy or ecstasy, through these simplified structures. He rejected the label of abstraction, preferring to describe his work as an attempt to communicate universal experiences. The lack of a specific title is intentional, as it prevents the viewer from searching for a narrative or a literal subject. Instead, the work functions as a space for contemplation. The interaction between the yellow fields and the grey base creates a tension that is characteristic of his mid-1950s output. The paint application remains visible, showing the brushwork that gives the surface a tactile quality. This print captures the subtle shifts in tone and the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, maintaining the balance between the expansive yellow fields and the grounding grey element.
