A refined Academic portrait by Eugene de Blaas, depicting a young woman in traditional dress standing beside baskets of fruit.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was an Italian painter of the Academic school. He is recognised for his depictions of Venetian life, often focusing on the daily activities of the working class. This composition presents a young woman standing against a weathered brick wall, her posture relaxed with hands on her hips. She is dressed in traditional attire, featuring a bodice and a layered skirt, which suggests a rural or provincial setting rather than the urban centres of Venice.
The artist employs a smooth, refined technique typical of the late nineteenth-century Academic tradition. The focus remains on the figure, whose expression is calm and direct. Two baskets containing fruit, including melons and peaches, are placed on the ground at her feet. These elements provide a sense of narrative, implying a market scene or a moment of rest during a day of labour. The texture of the brickwork behind her is rendered with attention to detail, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the colours of her clothing and the fruit to remain the primary focus.
De Blaas was born in Albano Laziale and later moved to Venice, where he became a professor at the Academy. His work often features soft lighting and a polished finish, characteristics that were highly sought after by collectors during his lifetime. This piece reflects his interest in genre painting, where the subject is captured in a moment of quietude. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned centrally, flanked by the baskets. The palette consists of earthy tones, including the warm hues of the brick and the muted browns of the clothing, contrasted by the lighter shades of the woman's undergarments and the fruit. This print captures the technical precision and the observational quality that defined the artist's career.
