A refined woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai depicting the tools used in the traditional Japanese incense ceremony, featuring delicate calligraphy and minimalist composition.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai depicts the refined tools associated with the Japanese incense ceremony, or kōdō. As a prominent practitioner of the surimono style, Shinsai produced works often commissioned by poetry circles for private distribution. These prints are characterised by their high production quality, featuring delicate paper and subtle colour application.
The composition presents a still life arrangement of essential implements: a lidded box decorated with cherry blossom motifs, a ceramic jar painted with a landscape scene, and a stand holding metal incense tools. The placement of these objects suggests a quiet, meditative preparation. The inclusion of calligraphic text, typical of the surimono format, integrates the visual elements with poetic commentary, reflecting the intellectual pursuits of the Edo-period literati who valued the sensory experience of incense appreciation.
Shinsai was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work shares a similar attention to precision and balance. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the material qualities of the objects. The soft, muted tones of the wood and ceramic contrast with the precise, thin lines used to define the forms. This print offers a glimpse into the domestic rituals of the period, where the selection and arrangement of tools were as important as the ceremony itself. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between graphic design, poetry, and traditional Japanese craft, capturing a moment of stillness through a minimalist aesthetic.
