This work by the Japanese monk-painter Taikyo Genju exemplifies the aesthetic principles of Muromachi period ink painting. Executed in ink on silk, the composition employs the concept of yohaku, or empty space, to create a sense of quietude. A solitary wagtail perches upon a weathered rock, positioned near a sparse, leafless branch that extends upward. The artist uses subtle ink washes to define the form of the bird and the texture of the stone, while the surrounding void suggests a vast, atmospheric environment.
The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper section integrates the visual and literary arts, a common practice among Zen-influenced painters of the era. The brushwork is restrained, focusing on the essential characteristics of the subject rather than decorative detail.
