A geometric abstraction by Paul Klee, featuring a faceted grid of triangles contrasted against a singular, organic egg form.
Paul Klee produced With the Egg in 1917, a period during which he experimented with the intersection of geometric abstraction and symbolic representation. The composition is structured around a grid of triangles, which create a faceted, crystalline surface across the majority of the picture plane. Within this rigid framework, Klee applies a varied palette of blues, ochres, reds, and blacks, allowing the colours to interact through transparency and layering.
The title provides a specific anchor for the viewer, directing attention to the small, circular form positioned in the lower section of the work. This singular, organic shape contrasts with the surrounding angular geometry, suggesting a tension between the structured, man-made order of the grid and the singular, fragile nature of the egg. Klee often employed such juxtapositions to explore themes of growth, origin, and the hidden mechanics of the natural world.
Technically, the work demonstrates Klee's mastery of watercolour and oil media on paper. He allows the texture of the support to remain visible, which adds a tactile quality to the geometric segments. The border, painted in a muted yellow, frames the composition, separating the internal activity from the surrounding space. This piece reflects Klee's interest in the musicality of visual art, where the arrangement of shapes and tones functions similarly to a rhythmic composition. By breaking down the image into these constituent parts, Klee invites the viewer to reconstruct the scene, moving between the abstract pattern and the specific, symbolic subject matter. The work remains a clear example of his ability to balance intellectual rigour with a playful, often enigmatic, approach to visual storytelling.
