A refined woodblock print from the Spring Rain Surimono Album, depicting a traditional Japanese writing set and poem card box.
This woodblock print originates from the Spring Rain Surimono Album, a collection of works by the artist Ryūryūkyo Shinsai. Surimono were privately commissioned prints, often produced for poetry circles to celebrate special occasions or the new year. Unlike commercial prints sold in shops, these were printed on high-quality paper with expensive pigments and techniques such as embossing or metallic dust application.
The composition focuses on a shikishi-bako, a box designed for storing poem cards, alongside a brush stand and ink stone. The artist employs a refined, observational style to capture the texture of the box and the arrangement of the writing implements. The inclusion of calligraphic text surrounding the objects integrates the visual art with the literary purpose of the commission. The print demonstrates the technical precision expected of the Ukiyo-e school during the early nineteenth century, particularly in the delicate rendering of the floral pattern on the box lid and the subtle shading of the ink tools.
Ryūryūkyo Shinsai was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work reflects the influence of his teacher through a focus on domestic objects and precise line work. The print functions as a celebration of the scholarly life, highlighting the tools of composition and correspondence. The muted palette and balanced arrangement of the objects create a sense of quiet order. This piece provides a window into the cultural practices of Edo-period Japan, where the exchange of poetry and the appreciation of fine stationery were central to social life among the literati. The print remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of surimono production, where artist, poet, and printer worked in close coordination to produce a singular, high-quality object for a discerning audience.
