A detailed Mughal miniature depicting the miraculous birth of Dhrishtadyumna from a sacrificial fire, taken from the Razm-nama manuscript.
This miniature painting originates from the Razm-nama, a Persian translation of the Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, the project sought to bridge cultural divides by rendering Hindu mythology into the Persian language and artistic idiom. The scene depicts the ritual sacrifice performed by the sages Yaja and Upayaja, which results in the miraculous birth of Dhrishtadyumna from the sacrificial fire.
The composition follows the conventions of the Mughal imperial workshop. The central platform, or vedi, is elevated to provide a clear view of the ritual. Dhrishtadyumna appears at the centre of the flames, fully armed and ready for battle, a visual representation of his divine origin. The surrounding figures, including the sages and various observers, are arranged in a semi-circular formation that directs the eye toward the central event. The architectural elements, such as the pavilion with its crenellated roof, provide a sense of spatial order.
The palette consists of earthy tones for the rocky background, contrasted by the bright colours of the figures' garments. The use of gold leaf adds a luminous quality to the scene, typical of high-status manuscripts produced for the royal library. The artist, Bilal Habshi, demonstrates a mastery of the Mughal style, balancing the narrative requirements of the text with the decorative demands of the page. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, and their gestures are expressive, conveying the solemnity of the occasion. This work is an example of the syncretic nature of Mughal art, where diverse cultural influences merge to create a distinct visual language. The attention to detail in the clothing and the ritual implements provides insight into the material culture of the period, while the narrative focus remains firmly on the mythological event described in the Adi-parva.
