This woodblock print is a plate from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that redefined the possibilities of the genre. Hokusai depicts a teahouse at Yoshida, a station along the Tokaido road, which was the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition is structured around the architectural frame of the teahouse, which acts as a window onto the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji.

Inside the structure, travellers rest from their journey. Hokusai captures a quiet, observational moment: figures sit on the raised floor, some conversing while others recline. A woman gestures towards the mountain, drawing the viewer's eye to the distant horizon. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan, provides the deep tones of the sky and the garments of the figures. This colour choice creates a sense of atmospheric depth that contrasts with the pale, neutral tones of the wooden interior.
