About

The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) holds a collection spanning 5,000 years and six continents. Mia emerged from the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, founded in 1883. Early benefactors, including William Hood Dunwoody, John R. Van Derlip, and Augustus L. Searle, helped the museum grow. Mia's encyclopedic collection includes paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, photography, prints, and drawings. Particular strengths include Asian art, with holdings from China, Japan, and South Asia. Mia also has a notable collection of European paintings, with works from the Renaissance through the 19th century. Modern and contemporary art is also well-represented, with pieces by artists from around the world.
