A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon II in a graceful courtesan role.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon II in the role of a courtesan. Bunchō was active during the mid-Edo period and gained recognition for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often captured the specific mannerisms and facial features of performers. This work belongs to the genre of bijin-ga, as the actor is dressed in the elaborate attire of a high-ranking woman of the pleasure quarters.
The composition is vertical, typical of the hosoban format favoured for solo actor portraits. The figure stands against a simplified architectural backdrop, which provides a sense of space without distracting from the subject. The actor wears a kimono decorated with crane and pine motifs, symbols of longevity and good fortune. The obi, tied in a prominent style, features a repeating circular pattern that adds visual weight to the centre of the figure. Beside the actor sits a cylindrical lantern, which serves as a prop to ground the scene and provide a sense of evening atmosphere.
Bunchō employs a refined line quality, characteristic of his work in the 1770s. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft oranges, muted greens, and earthy tones that have aged with the paper. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance the stylised conventions of the theatre with a degree of individual characterisation. The actor's posture, with a slight turn of the head and a delicate hand gesture, suggests the performative nature of the role. This print offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where the boundaries between gender and performance were fluidly navigated through the art of the woodblock print.
