This abstract geometric composition by Alberto Magnelli features simplified forms and dynamic arrangements. The interplay of shapes, lines, and colours creates a sense of movement and visual tension.
Alberto Magnelli (1888-1971) was a self-taught Italian painter, regarded as a founder of abstract art in Italy. Initially influenced by Cubism and Futurism, Magnelli developed his own distinctive style of geometric abstraction after moving to Paris in the 1930s. His work often features simplified forms, bold colours, and a dynamic sense of composition. He explored the relationships between shapes, lines, and colours, aiming to create a sense of harmony and balance. 'Animated Tension' is a composition of geometric shapes against a dark brown background. The shapes, primarily triangles and segments of circles, are rendered in white, tan, and grey. Some of the white shapes are filled with closely spaced, parallel black lines, adding a textural element to the otherwise smooth surfaces. The arrangement of the shapes creates a sense of movement and visual interest, as if the forms are interacting with each other in a dynamic interplay.
