A dynamic woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitsuru depicting the historical Battle of Hyōgo with Ashikaga Takauji at the centre.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuru depicts a scene from the Battle of Hyōgo, featuring the historical figure Ashikaga Takauji. As a work of musha-e, or warrior prints, it captures the dramatic tension of the conflict through dynamic poses and a crowded, active composition. The central figure of Takauji is mounted on a horse, commanding the attention of the viewer amidst the surrounding chaos of foot soldiers and combatants. The print is structured as a triptych, allowing for an expansive narrative flow that moves across the three panels.
Yoshitsuru employs a clear, graphic style typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Utagawa school. The figures are rendered with defined outlines and expressive facial features, conveying the intensity of the struggle. The background incorporates elements of the natural environment, such as trees and water, which provide a sense of place for the historical event. The colour palette is balanced, using muted earth tones alongside pops of red and blue to differentiate the opposing factions. Text blocks are integrated into the composition, providing context for the historical narrative being presented. This print reflects the popular interest in historical and legendary military tales during the Edo period, where such imagery was widely consumed by the public. The attention to detail in the armour and weaponry demonstrates the artist's focus on historical accuracy, even within the stylised conventions of the woodblock medium. The composition manages to balance the individual actions of the soldiers with the broader scope of the battle, creating a cohesive visual record of the event.
