Dorothea Tanning's 'Blue Mom' is a surrealist oil painting featuring distorted figures and a muted colour palette, creating a dreamlike and unsettling atmosphere.
Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) was an American painter, sculptor, writer, and poet. Her early work was influenced by Surrealism, and she later developed a more personal and abstract style. Tanning was married to the Surrealist artist Max Ernst for 30 years. She explored themes of identity, sexuality, and the subconscious in her art. 'Blue Mom' presents a distorted, dreamlike scene. A large, blue-toned figure dominates the composition, its features obscured and abstracted. A smaller, pale figure clings to the larger one, creating a sense of dependence or protection. The colour palette is dominated by blues and browns, with touches of yellow, creating a muted, unsettling atmosphere. The brushwork is loose and expressive, adding to the painting's sense of unease and ambiguity. The composition is unbalanced, with the figures positioned off-centre, further contributing to the painting's surreal quality.
