An early landscape by Piet Mondrian, featuring a quiet Dutch meadow and slender trees rendered with expressive, loose brushwork.
This work captures a transitional period in the career of Piet Mondrian, predating his move toward the geometric abstraction for which he is widely known. During the early 1900s, Mondrian engaged deeply with the Dutch tradition of rural painting, often focusing on the flat, expansive terrain of the Netherlands. In this composition, the artist employs a muted, earthy palette to depict a quiet meadow punctuated by slender, vertical trees. The brushwork is loose and expressive, showing the influence of late nineteenth-century European movements that prioritised subjective interpretation over strict realism. The trees act as rhythmic vertical elements against the horizontal expanse of the field, a structural interest that would eventually inform his later, more radical experiments with grid systems. The sky is rendered in heavy, moody tones, suggesting the atmospheric conditions typical of the Dutch countryside. Unlike his later works, which stripped away representational detail, this piece retains a clear connection to the physical world. The artist balances the dark, solid forms of the tree trunks with the softer, more diffuse textures of the foliage and grass. The inclusion of a small farmhouse in the distance provides a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, open space. This painting offers a view into the artist's early technical development, demonstrating his sensitivity to light and the structural potential of natural forms. It remains a study in how traditional subjects can be approached with a focus on rhythm, balance, and the interplay of line and colour.
