A surrealist sculpture by Remedios Varo, depicting a hybrid skeletal creature with a wheel-like spine, blending biological form with mechanical invention.
Homo rodans is a curious sculptural work by the Spanish-Mexican artist Remedios Varo. Created in 1959, this piece occupies a unique space within her output, which is more commonly associated with oil painting. The sculpture depicts a skeletal, hybrid creature that appears to be part human and part mechanical. Its spine forms a wheel, suggesting a form of locomotion that blends biological structure with industrial design.
Varo often explored themes of alchemy, science, and the occult. In this work, she presents a pseudo-scientific specimen, complete with a taxonomic name that translates to 'the rolling man'. The skeletal form is constructed from fish bones, wire, and wood, demonstrating her interest in the intersection of natural history and the fantastic. The creature possesses a delicate, almost fragile appearance, yet its design implies a functional purpose within a surrealist narrative.
The background of the original presentation often features a textured, atmospheric wash, which contrasts with the precise, linear quality of the sculpture itself. By creating a physical object rather than a painted illusion, Varo invites the viewer to consider the creature as a tangible entity. This work reflects her broader interest in the transformation of matter and the potential for new forms of life to emerge from the synthesis of disparate elements. It remains a singular example of her ability to bridge the gap between the organic world and the realm of invention, maintaining a sense of mystery through its precise, anatomical detail and its improbable, wheel-like anatomy.
