Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founder of the artists group Die Brücke (The Bridge), a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. He volunteered for military service in the First World War, but suffered a breakdown and was eventually discharged. In 1937, his work was branded as 'degenerate' by the Nazis, and over 600 of his works were removed from German museums. He committed suicide in 1938. 'Königstein and Railway' depicts the Königstein Fortress, a hilltop fortress near Dresden, Germany. The work is rendered in a monochrome palette, with heavy, gestural brushstrokes that convey a sense of dynamism and unease. The fortress looms over the scene, its structure simplified into angular forms. A railway line cuts across the foreground, with a train depicted as a dark, elongated shape. The surrounding environment is abstracted, with the landscape reduced to basic shapes and lines. The overall effect is one of tension and anxiety, reflecting the artist's emotional state and the broader anxieties of the time.
