A masterwork of French Baroque painting, this scene depicts the funeral of the Athenian general Phocion within a carefully ordered, classical environment.
Nicolas Poussin painted this work in 1648, drawing upon the life of the Athenian general Phocion as recounted by Plutarch. The composition follows the principles of the heroic or idealised style, where nature is arranged to reflect order, reason, and moral gravity. The scene is constructed with mathematical precision, using architectural elements and trees to create a series of receding planes that guide the eye toward the distant city.
In the foreground, two figures carry the body of Phocion on a stretcher. This somber event occurs within a setting of calm, balanced beauty. Poussin contrasts the private tragedy of the funeral with the orderly, functioning city in the background. The architecture, inspired by classical antiquity, includes temples and fortified walls that suggest a society governed by law and civic virtue. The light is clear and even, avoiding dramatic chiaroscuro in favour of a rational clarity that defines the forms of the trees, the water, and the distant mountains.
This painting demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between human action and the natural environment. The figures are small in scale, integrated into the larger structure of the scene rather than dominating it. The palette consists of earthy tones, greens, and soft blues, which contribute to the overall sense of stillness. Poussin was a central figure in the development of French classical painting, and this work remains a clear example of his ability to combine historical narrative with a highly structured, intellectual approach to composition. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Louvre in Paris.
