A striking woodcut by Paul Gauguin, featuring a central figure in a stylised Tahitian setting, defined by bold lines and graphic contrast.
Nave Nave Fenua, or Fragrant Isle, is a woodcut produced by Paul Gauguin during his first stay in Tahiti. The work reflects his interest in the visual language of the Pacific, moving away from the naturalism of his earlier European training. Gauguin carved the block himself, embracing the rough, tactile qualities of the wood to create bold contrasts between light and shadow.
The composition features a central female figure standing amidst a stylised tropical environment. To the left, a vertical border contains decorative motifs that recall indigenous carvings, framing the scene with a sense of ritual. The figure is rendered in dark, solid tones, while the background foliage is suggested through simplified, rhythmic lines. The title is inscribed at the top, integrated into the design as a graphic element.
This print is part of a series where Gauguin explored themes of mythology and the exotic. He often combined Tahitian motifs with his own imaginative interpretations, creating a personal visual vocabulary. The stark black ink against the paper provides a graphic weight that differs from his oil paintings of the same period. The work demonstrates his shift toward a more synthetic approach, where form and colour are used to convey mood rather than to document reality. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Gauguin focuses on the silhouette and the symbolic presence of the subject. This woodcut remains a clear example of his experimental approach to printmaking, where the limitations of the medium informed the final aesthetic outcome.
