This woodblock print, known as a surimono, captures a quiet moment of travel during the Edo period. Katsushika Hokusai depicts two figures on a coastal path, their attention directed toward the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji. The composition relies on the interplay between the figures in the foreground and the expansive, light-filled space of the shoreline. One figure kneels, gesturing toward the horizon, while the other stands, adjusting a head covering. Surimono were produced for small circles of poets and connoisseurs, often combining visual art with kyoka, a form of humorous or satirical waka poetry.
