A striking 1889 self-portrait by Paul Gauguin, featuring bold colours and symbolic imagery that define his transition into the Synthetist movement.
Painted in 1889, this work represents a period of intense creative output for Paul Gauguin while he resided in Le Pouldu, Brittany. The composition is a clear departure from traditional portraiture, favouring the flat planes of colour and bold outlines characteristic of the Synthetist style. Gauguin presents himself with a halo, a deliberate choice that invites interpretation regarding his self-perception as a martyr or a spiritual seeker. The inclusion of the snake, a symbol often associated with temptation or knowledge, creates a tension with the saintly halo above his head.
The palette is dominated by a stark, flat red background, which pushes the figure forward and denies any sense of spatial depth. The yellow garment and the dark, sinuous lines of the snake provide a strong contrast to the muted tones of his face. Gauguin uses these non-naturalistic colours to convey psychological states rather than objective reality. The apples hanging from the top right corner further complicate the narrative, suggesting themes of the Fall of Man and the duality of human nature.
This painting is a primary example of Gauguin's move away from Impressionist observation toward a more symbolic and decorative approach to art. By simplifying forms and using arbitrary colour, he sought to express internal ideas rather than external appearances. The work remains a compelling study of the artist's persona, reflecting his complex relationship with religious iconography and his own identity as an outsider in the art world of his time. The deliberate rejection of realistic modelling in favour of graphic, expressive shapes allows the viewer to focus on the symbolic weight of the objects surrounding the artist.
