Paul Gauguin's 'Te raau rahi (The Big Tree)' from 1891 captures the artist's early impressions of Tahiti, depicting a lush landscape and figures engaged in daily life, rendered in his distinctive Post-Impressionist style.
Paul Gauguin's 1891 painting, Te raau rahi (The Big Tree), exemplifies his Post-Impressionist style and his fascination with Polynesian life. Gauguin moved to Tahiti in 1891, seeking an escape from European civilisation and a return to what he perceived as a more authentic and unspoiled way of life. This painting is one of the early works from his first Tahitian period. The title is Tahitian for 'The Big Tree'. The painting depicts a lush, verdant scene with several figures engaged in daily activities. A large tree dominates the composition, its trunk and branches framing the scene. In the foreground, a figure sits on the ground, while another bends over, possibly tending to the earth. In the background, a simple dwelling is visible, suggesting a harmonious integration of human life with the natural surroundings. The colour palette is characterised by earthy tones, with greens, yellows, and browns predominating. The brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to the overall sense of immediacy and spontaneity. Gauguin's use of flattened perspective and simplified forms further enhances the painting's decorative quality.
