A detailed etching by Anthony van Dyck depicting the Venetian painter Titian with his mistress, featuring a memento mori skull in the foreground.
This etching by Anthony van Dyck depicts the Venetian master Titian in his later years, accompanied by a woman often identified as his mistress. The composition draws inspiration from Titian's own painting of the same subject, which van Dyck encountered during his formative travels in Italy. Van Dyck, a student of Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrates his technical command of the etching medium here, using varied line weights to define the textures of fur, fabric, and the weathered skin of the elderly painter.
The inclusion of a skull in the lower right corner introduces a memento mori element, a common motif in Baroque art that invites reflection on the transience of life and the physical decay that accompanies age. The contrast between the aged, bearded artist and the youthful, radiant woman creates a narrative tension, further emphasised by the gaze of the woman directed toward the viewer. The inscription at the base of the print, dedicated to the patron Luca van Uffel, provides historical context regarding the circulation of such works among collectors and connoisseurs of the period.
Van Dyck's approach to portraiture in this print reflects his ability to capture psychological depth through subtle shifts in light and shadow. The etching process allows for a crispness of detail that highlights the tactile quality of the subjects' attire. As a piece of printmaking, it serves as a record of van Dyck's engagement with the Venetian tradition, showing how he adapted the painterly style of his predecessors into the graphic medium. The work remains a fine example of seventeenth-century print culture, where the reproduction of masterworks allowed for the wider dissemination of artistic ideas across Europe.
