A fine example of Nasta'liq calligraphy, attributed to the master Mir Ali Tabrizi, featuring elegant script within illuminated cloud-like reserves.
This piece represents the Nasta'liq script, a style of Persian calligraphy traditionally attributed to the master Mir Ali Tabrizi. Active during the late 14th and early 15th centuries, Tabrizi is credited with codifying the rules of this elegant, flowing script, which became the standard for writing Persian poetry and literary texts. The composition features lines of text arranged within cloud-like reserves, a common technique in manuscript illumination of the Timurid period. These reserves are set against a background decorated with floral motifs and gold leaf, creating a contrast between the dark ink of the letters and the illuminated field.
The Nasta'liq script is characterised by its rhythmic quality, where the vertical strokes are short and the horizontal strokes are elongated. This creates a sense of movement across the page. The ink work demonstrates a high level of technical control, with varying line weights that define the structure of each character. The surrounding border, while partially obscured, suggests a frame of geometric or floral patterns typical of high-status manuscripts produced in the royal workshops of the era. Such works were often collected in albums or used as frontispieces for literary collections. The use of gold and pigments indicates that this was a luxury item, intended for a patron who valued both the content of the text and the aesthetic presentation of the script. The preservation of the paper and the clarity of the ink provide a window into the scribal traditions that defined Persian visual culture for centuries.
