A nude figure stands against a swirling background in Dorothea Tanning's 'Woman Artist, Nude, Standing'. The painting's soft brushwork and obscured face create a dreamlike, surreal atmosphere.
Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) was an American painter, sculptor, writer, and poet. Her early work was influenced by Surrealism, and she married fellow Surrealist artist Max Ernst in 1946. Her paintings often explored themes of the subconscious, dreams, and the uncanny. Tanning's work evolved over time, moving from precise, realistic depictions to more abstract and fragmented forms. She experimented with different media, including sculpture and soft sculpture, and continued to create art well into her later years. Her work is held in numerous museum collections. 'Woman Artist, Nude, Standing' presents a full-length female nude, rendered in a soft, diffused style. The figure is positioned centrally, with an ambiguous background of swirling yellows and browns. The woman's head is obscured by a dark, geometric shape, possibly a hat or headdress, adorned with a single red dot. The brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to the dreamlike quality of the composition. The palette is dominated by warm tones, with touches of pink and blue adding depth and complexity.
