Heinrich Aldegrever
Heinrich Aldegrever was a German artist and one of the group known as the Kleinmeister. Working in the manner of Albrecht Dürer, he produced engravings on a minute scale beginning around 1520. His work included mythological and devotional images, as well as ornament prints designed as models for the decoration of arms and armour.
Biography
Aldegrever often created designs for sword or dagger sheaths, which he typically divided into two segments. The bottom half featured ascending ornament, while the top half contained a standing figure or couple. These prints often incorporated racy innuendo or moral commentary, such as warnings against the power of lust. By the 1530s, he expanded his designs to depict entire daggers, using shading to communicate the illusion of depth and surface contour.
