Mural
Commissioned by Peggy Guggenheim for the entrance hall of her Manhattan townhouse, this painting stretches over six metres wide. It was Pollock's largest work to date and a breakthrough in scale and energy. Swirling figures and rhythmic loops of paint cover the surface in a continuous frieze. The composition has no centre and no resting point; the eye is pulled across the canvas in a ceaseless lateral movement. Pollock had not yet developed his drip technique, but Mural already demonstrates the all-over composition and physical ambition that would define his later poured paintings. Guggenheim later donated the canvas to the University of Iowa, where it remains one of the most important paintings in any American university collection.
