A classic example of Neoplasticism by Piet Mondrian, featuring a precise grid of black lines and primary colour blocks.
Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter and a primary figure in the De Stijl movement, developed a visual language based on the reduction of form and colour. Composition No. 10, created between 1939 and 1942, reflects his pursuit of universal harmony through the use of a strict grid system. The work consists of black horizontal and vertical lines that intersect to form rectangular planes of varying sizes.
Mondrian limited his palette to the three primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) alongside the non-colours of white, black, and grey. In this specific piece, the white ground acts as an active element rather than a passive background. The black lines vary in thickness and placement, creating a sense of rhythm across the canvas. By avoiding diagonal lines or representational imagery, Mondrian sought to express a sense of order that he believed existed beneath the surface of the physical world.
This approach, which he termed Neoplasticism, aimed to strip away the subjective and the decorative to reach a state of pure abstraction. The composition is balanced through the asymmetrical arrangement of the coloured blocks and the spacing of the grid. The work is a clear example of his later period, where the lines often extend to the very edges of the canvas, suggesting that the structure continues beyond the frame. The precision of the execution reflects his belief that art should be as objective and rational as mathematics. This print captures the exact proportions and the flat, matte application of paint characteristic of the original oil on canvas, providing a clean, geometric addition to a modern interior.
